How Churr works

The whole thing, in order, including the parts that are awkward to explain.

The twin

When you join, Churr asks you to talk for about fifteen minutes. Not a questionnaire — a conversation, about what you do on a Saturday, what you have been meaning to try, what you would rather avoid, and when you are actually free. You can type the whole thing instead if speaking out loud is not for you.

Out of that, Churr writes your twin: a short, readable description of you that an AI can reason with. You read it. You edit it. Things you mark private stay in your account and are never said to anybody. Nothing goes out until you have seen it.

The night

Once a night, your twin goes out. It talks to other people’s twins in your part of Toronto — and only to twins. There is no point in the process where an AI sends a message to a person. Two twins talk for a few turns, and what they are looking for is one concrete, specific reason the two people behind them would get on. Not “you both like music”. Something you could build a Saturday around.

Most pairs do not find one. That is the intended outcome: an evening that produces no introduction is an evening that did not waste your Saturday.

The morning

You wake up to introductions — 2 on the free tier, 5 with Churr Plus. Each one says who the person is, why the twins thought you two, and a first thing to do that both twins already agreed on: a place, a day and a time that works for both of you.

You say hi, or you do not. Nobody is notified that you passed.

The plan

If you both say hi, the plan is already there. You can change it, and most people do. It is always somewhere public — one of the places on this map, or a free event from the City’s calendar — at an hour you both said you were free.

Safety

Every first meeting is in a public place, by design; the app does not offer a private address as a suggestion. You can block anyone in one tap. Reporting someone blocks them from you immediately, before anybody reads the report. You can save a trusted contact and text them your plan — the place and the time and nothing else — from your own phone, with one tap.

New accounts go through a liveness check: a few seconds of your own camera, to establish there is a person there. More about safety →

Privacy, in plain language

Churr does not track where you are. There is no background location in this app. The map is a list of public places, and the two features that touch a coordinate say so out loud: “I’m here” compares your position to a place and then throws the position away, and sharing that you are on your way lasts two hours, is visible only to the people on that plan, and is deleted afterwards.

Your twin is yours. You can read it, edit it, export everything Churr holds about you, and delete your account — and when you delete, it is deleted, not hidden. The privacy policy →

What Churr is not

It is not a dating app, and it does not have a dating mode. It is Toronto only while it is small, because a friends app in a city with nobody in it is a list of empty rooms. And your twin is not you: it is a stand-in that you wrote, that talks only to other stand-ins.
